Voiced and Voiceless Consonants

Russian consonants may be voiced and voiceless. You know some of these consonants already.

Voiced

б в г д ж з

м н л р

voiceless

п ф к т ш с

As you can see the voiced consonants л, м, н, р have no pairs. In speech the paired sounds may pass from one to another “losing”, or “gaining” voice. These changes depend on the position of a sound in a word and on neighbouring consonants.

1. Voiced consonants are pronounced as voiceless at the end of the word:

сад [сат] a garden
нож [нош] a knife
клуб [клуп] a club
2. Voiced consonants become voiceless before voiceless consonants:
 , ,
ложка [лошкъ] a spoon

3. Voiceless consonants become voiced before all voiced consonants except л, м, н, р, в:

вокзал [в^ гзал]                                 a railway station

как вас зовут [как ваз з^вут]         what is your name?

это наш дом [этъ наж дом]             this is our house

 4. Before л, м, н, р and в the voiceless consonants are pronounced as voiceless:

слово [словъ]                                       a word

5. The consonant л, м, н, р are pronounced as voiced before the voiceless consonants; they don’t have voiceless counterparts:

булка [булкъ]                                         round bread

6. It is important not to confuse the voiced consonants with the voiceless consonants because they often differentiate the meaning of the words:

борт - порт        a side - a port            ваза - фаза                a vase - a phase

жар - пар           hit - a globe               год - кот                    a year - a cat

Ex. 4. Read.

        1 1
Это наш дом. Это ваш стол.
                  , ,
Это наш сад. Это ваша ложка.
           ~
Это наш клуб. Вот ваш нож.

Ex. 5. Look at the picture. What are Sasha and Antony saying, when showing their room to John and Jane.

Ex. 6. Look at the picture. What is Masha saying, when showing her school and class room to John and Jane?
