Forms Of The Past Tense For Verbs In The Perfective And Imperfective Aspects

The verbs in the past tense are changing in genders and numbers.

The form of the past tense is derivated from the stem of the infinitive with the aid of suffix –Л + Gender endings. There is single form both for verbs of imperfective and perfective aspects.

					after the consonant -СЯ after vowels -СЬ

Meaning of Verb forms in the Past Tense.

Apart from the main meaning- description of action which took place in the past, the forms in the past tense are also used to specify the following:

1. Desirability to perfom an action a) in simple sentence b) in complex sentence	a) Я хотел бы поехать на море. b) Я хотел бы, чтобы вы поехали на море. Скажите Борису, чтобы он пришел ко мне.
2. Polite request	Не могли бы вы помочь мне?
3. Unreal condition	Если бы у меня было время, я бы пошел в театр. (Но у меня нет времени, и я не пойду в театр)
The form in the past tense + the particle БЫ In a complex sentence with the meaning of unreal condition the particle БЫ is used in both parts of sentence.
