The nominative case in the singular - is the starting form, on basis of which you can derive all the other forms of nouns.
All the nouns in the dictionaries are given in the nominative case.
Nominative case is always applied without prepositions.

Subject (person),undergoing influence (in passive structure).	Картина нарисована в ХIХ веке. Сестра приглашена на вечер.
The object of possession.	У меня есть машина.
The object of necessity.	Мне нужен словарь. Нам нужен врач.
The state of person.	У ребенка температура.
The object of presence.	В городе есть театр.
Event, action in temporary phase.	Урок начался.

Predicate of a sentence	Москва-столица. Он-врач.
Object name	Это газета "Правда"
